City residents who are yet to enroll themselves for Aadhaar cards, will now get their cooking gas cylinder without a subsidy.
Come October 1 and subsidy on the LPG cylinder would be
transferred through direct benefit transfer(DBT) to the consumer's bank
account. LPG consumers need to get their Aadhaar number linked to their
LPG connection and the bank account to continue to avail off the subsidy
on the nine cylinders per year.
More than two lakh LPG connections are availed by the residents
in the city. "Around 48 per cent connections from our comapny have been
seeded with the Aadhaar number and a further 15 per cent with the bank
accounts" said an official from Hindustan Petroleum (HP). After the
launch of the DBT-L (DBT for LPG) scheme, the gas cylinder would be
provided at market price.
"A grace period of three months (starting from October 1) will be
given to the consumers for seeding their bank accounts to their Aadhaar
linked LPG connection and by January 1 it would be mandatory to get the
cooking gas subsidy through Aadhaar" said sources from the Unique
Identification Authority of India.
While the LPG providers, Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and HP
would be pulling up their socks to generate more awareness about the
scheme UIDAI has enrolled around 95 percent of the UT's residents for
Aadhaar.
The launch of the scheme in the UT is part of the third Phase of
the DBT-L scheme. It has already been launched in 54 districts in the
country. The first phase was launched on June 1 covering 34 districts
and the second phase on September 1 covering 34 distrcits. The Centre
plans to cover 269 districts under DBT-L by January 1.
